I focus on understanding and addressing critical issues in development policy, particularly in areas such as the extractive, mining, and agriculture sectors, as well as on issues surrounding rural development, entrepreneurship, and migration. Using causal inference approaches, I aim to produce evidence-based results that inform effective policies and foster sustainable development, especially for marginalized and disadvantaged communities.

My research spans diverse areas, addressing critical challenges in development policy and practice. I have investigated mining-induced displacement in Afghanistan, highlighting its socio-economic and health impacts while advocating for holistic compensation frameworks.

“Field Survey of Saffron Farmers in Afghanistan, 2018”

In agriculture, my work has focused on enhancing sustainability and resilience for smallholder farmers through policies promoting saffron production, agricultural credit, and market access in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and the Kyrgyz Republic. Additionally, I have studied social assistance programs, demonstrating their effectiveness in boosting education, health, and food security, while emphasizing the need for inclusive designs. My contributions extend to disaster recovery, sustainable energy, and transportation, including the health benefits of Nepal’s post-earthquake recovery policies, the impact of the ASEAN Open Skies Agreement on air travel, and strategies for promoting clean cooking technologies. These efforts reflect my commitment to generating evidence-based insights that inform equitable and sustainable policy solutions globally.

My current research projects addresses critical issues in migration, resilience, and integration. For example, I am exploring the prevalence of domestic violence among Afghan immigrants and the socio-economic challenges they face during integration in the United States in an ongoing survey project. With this project, I aim to inform inclusive policies that foster social well-being. In Afghanistan, I focus on smallholder farmers’ preferences for drought resilience measures to enhance agricultural sustainability and food security. Additionally, I examine the socio-economic drivers of illegal migration among South Asian youth, providing insights into its motivations and broader regional implications.
