Many of our students are public servants from across the world, who bring their expertise, first-hand case knowledge, and empirical puzzles to our program. They collaborate extensively with our faculty to produce academically rigorous, policy-driven research that our students can apply directly to their countries\u2019 policymaking after finishing their degree. We also achieve high levels of quality and output with faculty-student research collaboration, as our collaborative research output demonstrates.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The faculty includes specialists in economics, management, geophysics, environmental policy, urban planning, rural development, and political science, who bring field expertise alongside causal inference methods to help our students propose, implement, and evaluate important policies. Methodologically, we can advise students who may be interested in applying econometrics, survey methods, remote sensing, climate modeling, micro-and macro-economics, and decision analytics, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/econdev.hiroshima-u.ac.jp\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_5152-2.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-94\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Our Methodological Orientation:<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We aim to train our students in evidence-based knowledge&nbsp;and skills in the Social Sciences. Causal inference methods have&nbsp;improved our ability to evaluate the impacts of policies&nbsp;compared to the previous personal-experience-based qualitative&nbsp;and&nbsp;subjective approach. Evidence-based decision making does&nbsp;not merely mean the&nbsp;utilization of data; rather,&nbsp;it explicitly&nbsp;prohibits the na\u00efve utilization of&nbsp;data.&nbsp;\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence-based approach acknowledges that the\u00a0\u201cwisdom\u201d that our data shows in front of\u00a0our eyes is often\u00a0merely a correlation, and that evidence-based decision-making\u00a0requires a thorough investigation of cause and effect.\u00a0The fact\u00a0that \u201cpeople with higher education enjoy higher income\u201d does\u00a0not\u00a0<em>necessarily\u00a0<\/em>imply \u201cpromoting higher education generates\u00a0income growth.\u201d The fact that \u201ccountries with higher birth rates\u00a0face higher poverty\u201d does not imply \u201csuppressing birth reduces\u00a0poverty.\u201d The fact that \u201ccities with\u00a0better sewage have better\u00a0child health\u201d does not imply \u201cbetter sewage improves child\u00a0health.\u201d If we want to measure the impact of a policy that\u00a0tackles these problems, we must uncover the causal\u00a0processes\u00a0behind the observed data.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To tackle issues such as economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation, and urban\/rural dynamics, the International Economic Development Program provides a systematic curriculum to cultivate abilities to identify and target issues, correctly analyze data, and evaluate policy proposals that can link advanced social science methods to practical problem solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-95\" style=\"width: 700px\" src=\"https:\/\/econdev.hiroshima-u.ac.jp\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/img_6963.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Economic Development Program is an interdisciplinary program that brings advanced professionals and researchers together to contribute to the development, planning, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of policy-making for economic development. \u200b Our program combines purely academic research with applied policy work.
